Acting School Finance Director Embraces Budget Process Changes

John Spang is filling Gary Franzi's seat temporarily until a permanent finance director is appointed.

So is Interim Finance Director John Spang, Jr., who is doing so while acclimating himself to a new school district.

"It feels pretty good starting right in the throes of budget season," Spang said. "There's not much time to relax before things are going full tilt."

He is temporarily replacing , who is leaving his 15-year post to explore other career options. He said Nov. 29 that Franzi had been helping him with the transition for two to three weeks.

"The transition's been going pretty smoothly," Spang said."Certainly [Avon] has a great reputation in Connecticut and across the country. I've known for a long time some of the great things that are going here."

Spang is learning the new accounting system, Budget Sense that the district has acquired. It is also his first time , which charts the projected revenues and the expenditures side by side. He, like Avon, is used to reporting the net budget. 

Yet, he said remains enthusiastic about the chance to continue the success of the district "and get into helping support the new beginning the superintendent mentioned and some of the things that are soon to be accomplished."

Spang spent most of his prior career in school finance at Greenwich Public Schools. He was there for 18 years and did similar work in Somers, NY, part of Westchester County, for four. The past couple years, he has done private finance work in the pupil transportation industry.

The Boston College economics graduate went on to get his master of business administration degree at Indianna University and a master of science education degree at Fordham University.
