Avon Community Reflects on 9/11 on 11th Anniversary

Residents attended a memorial service at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and left flowers for Amy Toyen, a victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Remember. Reflect. Recommitt.

That was the theme of the 9/11 memorial service at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department Tuesday morning.

"Although 11 years have now passed since our world changed suddenly and irrevocably, none of us will ever forget the attack on the Twin Towers – where we were, who we were with and what we were doing," Avon Town Manager Brandon Robertson said at the ceremony.

Avon volunteer firefighters, police, town officials and residents took a moment Sept. 11 to remember the lives lost in the terrorist attacks 11 years ago. They also reflected on the emergency personnel who responded to Ground Zero. That  included "343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police and eight private EMS/EMT paramedics" that died on 9/11, according to an .

Throughout the day residents also visited the bronze statue of a girl reading a book outside of the Avon Free Public Library. The statue portrays a younger Amy Toyen, an Avon resident killed in the Twin Towers at the age of 24 as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Every year on 9/11, people leave her flowers.
