Where, When? Wed., Feb. 23 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the , 281 Country Club Rd, Avon.

Why go? Children in grades four through eight are welcome to the library for the unveiling of the new 2012 Nutmeg award nominees. Stay for all three courses of this read-a-thon and you'll be entered to win a copy of all 10 titles. Pizza, snacks and more will be available. No need to register, just stop by. Each participant will receive one new nominee to keep.

Why go? Enjoy simple pleasures during the cold weekends in February. We'll have games, toys, books and art supplies for you and your family to use.  A fire in the hearth and refreshments will help take the chill out. No registration is required.

Riverside Reptiles

Where, When? Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the , 19 School St, Unionville, CT 06085

Why go? Learn about how these fascinating but often misunderstood reptiles eat, locate prey and grow. Meet numerous species of snakes. Find out which ones live in this area and how to protect them.

Pricing? Program is free and sponsored by Farmington Recreation.

Happy Birthday Elmo!

Where, When? Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at Borders, 1600 S East Rd, Farmington, CT 06032

Why go? Little ones will enjoy music, stories and crafts centering around the 3rd birthday of their favorite monster.

Pricing? Free and open to all.

Where, When? Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Connecticut Historical Society, 1 Elizabeth St, Hartford, CT 06105

Why go? Listen as master storyteller Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti uses traditional storytelling methods to weave together a tapestry of words, sounds, and movements. Everyone will learn and delight in the stories of the African-American animal tales of Brer Rabbit. The performance will last approximately one hour. Free on-site parking is available!

Pricing? Free with general museum admission - $6 adults; $3 seniors (65 and over), students (with valid id), and youth (6-17); free for members and children 5 and under.
