Rebecca Hyatt: The Assassination of JFK

Spotlighting Avon High School senior mastery projects.

Name: Rebecca Hyatt, Class of 2011 graduate

Senior Mastery Project: On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a convertible through Dealey Plaza in Dallas. That same day, Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with his murder. Since this time, many Americans have suspected a cover-up by the government. Through her research, Hyatt formed the belief that the government was involved in the death of JFK.

America's Opinion: According to a 2003 Gallup poll, 75 percent of Americans do not believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Additionally, a 2004 Fox News poll found that 66 percent of Americans thought there had been a conspiracy while 74 percent thought there had been a cover up.

Autopsy: "I found that...there were pictures and slides of the autopsy [that were] missing and the brain is no longer on record," Hyatt said.

Additionally, although Texas state law requires autopsies to take place in-state when someone dies within its borders, Kennedy's autopsy took place in Maryland.

The Grassy Knoll: "A lot of witnesses said they saw it happen on the grassy knoll...one lady said there was an illegally parked car across the street from the grassy knoll and she reported seeing a gun coming out of the trunk," Hyatt said.

This would mean Oswald was either innocent or had an accomplice since he was accused of firing three rifle shots from the sixth floor of the Book Depository.

Choice of Vehicle: "I know it [was] a different time in the sixties, but being in a convertible car and having windows...open in a place where most people didn't like JFK... It's surprising the secret service would let him do that, Hyatt said. "I think the government was definitely involved."

About Rebecca: While attending Avon High School, she played on the softball and soccer teams. This fall, she's heading to Bentley Unversity in Waltham, Mass.
