Construction on the first Mormon temple in Connecticut starts this weekend in Farmington. Read on to find out about other notable Avon and area news, events, and blogs.

Happy Thursday, Avon!

You know what today means? It's almost the weekend, so I'm going to share some news and events happening today or over the next few days that you might want to know about.

But first, I just wanted to say that it humbles me to have the honor of covering Avon, having grown up in Farmington. You know a lot about a town by growing up in the area, but reporting on it brings a whole new level of understanding about what makes the community work.

So, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for being you. For being Avon.

Okay, now for the notable news, events and blogs of the day and weekend.

Reader Peter Mitchell's Speak Out post, "The Most Tragic Summer: Isn't it time to start being parents?" on Farmington Patch about parents' responsibility to crack down on underage drinking is generating some conversation in Avon and Farmington. Where do you stand on the issue? This is a great example of how you can use our platform to express your opinions in a constructive manner. You can post to Speak out here or post a blog.
