Joanne Beers and Jeff Koenig have been elected to the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars. The Avon residents join an active leadership team of the nonprofit organization that raises funds for local high school seniors who need assistance in paying for college.
“We are very fortunate to have talented residents like Joanne and Jeff who step forward and volunteer to help make college a reality for many of our young people,” explains John C. Carmon, President of Avon Dollars for Scholars and of Carmon Community Funeral Homes. “Each of them brings years of professional expertise and community involvement, and we look forward to their input and support.”
Joanne Beers serves on the Boards of the Connecticut Consortium of Education Foundations and the Avon Chamber of Commerce, and she is the Past Chair of the Avon Education Foundation. She spent nearly 30 years working at Aetna, retiring several years ago as the Vice President of Plan Sponsor Administration, National Accounts. Beers received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. An Avon resident since 1979, she and her husband, Earl Cree, have one daughter.
Jeff Koenig is the Chief Financial Officer of Ability Resources, Inc., a long-term care reinsurer and third party administrator. He is a member of the Board of Church Homes, Inc., a nonprofit, nonsectarian corporation that owns Avery Heights retirement community in Hartford, Conn. A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelors degree in accounting, Koenig and his wife, Barb, have lived in Avon for a decade and have two daughters and a son.
Avon Dollars for Scholars is a community-based organization that works year-round with local residents, businesses and foundations to raise money to provide scholarships to qualified high school students who are pursuing post-secondary education. Since its establishment in 1978, the organization has awarded a total of more than $1,030,000 in scholarships to 1,274 local students. Contributions of any size are accepted year-round. The Avon chapter of Dollars for Scholars is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and contributions are considered tax-deductible.
To be eligible to apply for funds from Avon Dollars for Scholars, students must be residents of Avon, regardless of which high school they attend: public; private; magnet; parochial; or technical school. Most of the scholarships awarded are based upon financial need and merit, but some are given to students who display exceptional levels of community service and academic achievement.
