We wish to thank the many volunteers who made the companion displays for the Avon Public Library’s national touring exhibit entitled “Lincoln: The Constitution and Civil War.” This remarkable exhibit and the companion displays are now at the library until February 3rd. About a year ago, the Avon Free Public Library was awarded the national touring display. The library staff asked the Avon Historical Society to complement the display with other exhibits that would show the life of Lincoln, his family and his connection to Connecticut. The Avon Sesquicentennial Committee for the Civil War, of the Avon Historical Society, is to be commended for its expert display in the Marian Hunter History Room's exhibit case entitled “Lincoln and Connecticut." Talented volunteers who work at the History Room also created several exhibits inside the room: a 12-person setting of the dining room table of Christmas 1861, the pets of the Lincoln, the children of Lincoln, the gowns of Mrs. Lincoln and a reproduction of a White House fireplace with stockings hung for Santa. We are very grateful for the hundreds of volunteer hours of research and production for these companion displays, and we congratulate the Avon Free Public Library for obtaining and installing the wonderful "Lincoln" exhibit. The public is invited to see the national touring exhibit, and the companion displays, during regular library hours until February 3. We encourage everyone to take an hour or two this winter to visit the Avon Free Public Library and see these exceptional exhibits. You will feel transported back to a critical time in our nation's history.
