Subject:  Winter Storm Charlotte

Last night’s storm dropped 24” of snow in the Hartford Region, including Avon, and upwards of 36” in parts of the State.  Minimal power disruption was experienced in Avon (the number to call if power goes out is (800) 286-2000).  The Governor has issued an Executive Order banning all non-emergency vehicles from roadways, which includes local roadways.

Avon Public Works staff worked through the night to ensure that major local roadways are passable by emergency vehicles, but with record levels of snow on the ground and several more inches of snow projected through Saturday afternoon, the process to re-open local roadways will take time.  When clearing snow on your property, please do not move it into the roadway, as this will delay the cleanup process.

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department asks that if your home heating system is exhausted on the side of your house (low enough to be obstructed by snow), please check to make sure it is unobstructed to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Even once the Governor has lifted the driving ban, residents are strongly encouraged to use caution on roadways, as wind gusts may create temporary whiteout conditions even after the snow ceases.
