Avon Dollars for Scholars Welcomes New Board Members

A dozen Farmington Valley residents have been elected to the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars, a nonprofit organization that has raised more than $1.1 million in college scholarship funds over the past three decades for local graduating high school students.

“Our Board is fortunate to welcome a dynamic new team of volunteers, each of whom brings unique experiences and a passion for community involvement,” explains John C. Carmon, President of Avon Dollars for Scholars and of Carmon Community Funeral Homes. “They complement our committed group of existing Board members as we move forward to raise scholarship funds that we will present to scores of local graduating high school seniors this June.

  • Ann August, owner of Senior Transition Services of CT, LLC in Simsbury;
  • Ann Fisher, a Realtor at Douglas Elliman Real Estate in New York City;
  • David Kotler, Neurosurgical Physician Assistant at the University of Connecticut Medical Center;
  • Kathy Marioni, Executive Director of the Connecticut State Department of Labor’s Office of Workforce Competitiveness;
  • Mardell Pena, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Virtus Investment Partners, Inc. in Hartford;
  • Sarah Roberson, Principal of Out-of-Home Network LLC in Avon;
  • Devra Sisitzky, owner of 4 Paws Memorials, LLC in Avon, which provides pet cremation and memorial services;
  • Heather Toyen, a School Counselor at Avon High School and Thompson Brook School in Avon;
  • Steve Wolfberg, Principal/Chief Creative Officer, Cronin and Company Marketing Communications in Glastonbury;
  • Heidi Zacchera, a retired teacher in the Canton Public Schools and a Board member of the Avon Lions Club; and
  • Sydney Chatfield, Student Board Member of Avon Dollars for Scholars – The Junior at Avon High School is responsible for providing ideas and suggestions to the Avon Dollars for Scholars Board and to generate buzz among students about applying for scholarships and encouraging attendance at fundraising events.

 Avon Dollars for Scholars is a community-based organization that works year-round with local residents, businesses and foundations to raise money to provide scholarships to qualified high school students who are pursuing post-secondary education. The Avon chapter of Dollars for Scholars is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and contributions are considered tax-deductible.

Contributions of any size are accepted year-round. April 4 is the deadline for donors of $300 or more who want a “named” scholarship and wish to be recognized in June at the school’s awards night and graduation ceremony.
