State Rep. Tim LeGeyt Visits Reggio Magnet School of the Arts

AVON State Rep. Tim LeGeyt (R-17) recently visited CREC Reggio Magnet School of the Arts in Avon.  Joined by Reggio Magnet School Principal Josephine Di Pietro Smith, Vice Principal Mark Kibby, Executive Assistant to the Principal Stacey Allen, and CREC Coordinator Julia Winer, Rep. LeGeyt had the opportunity to engage with teachers and students as they toured the school grounds.

“It was a great opportunity for me to visit the temporary site of CREC Reggio Magnet School of the Arts,” said LeGeyt.  “I appreciated going to the classrooms and talking with the teachers and students.  It is apparent that the students have a very interactive role in their learning process.

“Our students and staff were excited to welcome State Representative Tim LeGeyt to our school,” said Principal Di Pietro Smith.  “This is a wonderful opportunity to share with Representative LeGeyt the enriched learning that takes place at Reggio.  Avon town members have been a source of ongoing support for our school community and Representative LeGeyt’s visit is further evidence of the growing ties between Reggio families, staff and the town of Avon.”

The Reggio Emilia Education Philosophy, which puts the natural environment at the center of its approach, is reflected throughout the building.  From the floor to ceiling windows allowing in natural lighting and scenery, to the student-made decor with natural accents, students learn together in an environment that not only brings the inspiration of nature indoors, but also connects the students to the outdoors.  “Although the school is operating at a temporary site, I was impressed with the integration of the Reggio Education Philosophy, and the incorporation of nature, and the natural environment, into the physical space,” said LeGeyt.  “I wish Principal Di Pietro Smith and her staff much success as they continue to inspire and engage students and their families in the learning process.”

The current site of CREC Reggio Magnet School is a temporary location while the new facility is under construction.  Students will transition from their current location to the new building in January 2014.  The new school is projected to enroll 450 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade.
