AVON -  State Representatives Brian Becker (D-19) and Tim LeGeyt (R-17) joined Foodshare President and CEO, Gloria McAdam last week at St. Ann’s Church in Avon for a Mobile Foodshare event.  The Representatives joined Ms. McAdam and a team of volunteers in distributing food to local residents in need.

“I am always glad to help out with this great program in our community,” said LeGeyt.  “In these difficult economic times, it is important to help the neediest among us.  They are our neighbors, our friends, and our family members.  I also commend Gloria McAdam for her tireless efforts to lead a dedicated team focused on combating hunger in our communities.”

Representatives LeGeyt and Becker spent time working alongside the volunteers as they distributed food and spoke with residents.  In total, 88 households were served at the Mobile Foodshare site managed by St. Ann’s Church, whose role is to screen clients for eligibility, and to recruit and train the volunteers to run the site.

“Foodshare is a great organization that helps those who are struggling in our community," said Becker.  "Summer is a particularly difficult time for many, since children who may receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch in school are home for the summer.  That is one reason why Mobile Foodshare is an important part of Foodshare's overall mission to end hunger."

Thirty years of food banking has made Foodshare a leader in anti-hunger work in Greater Hartford, which consists of all 42 towns of Hartford and Tolland Counties.  As Central Connecticut’s regional food bank, Foodshare is the liaison between the food industry and nearly 300 partner programs – including soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and food pantries across the region.

Beginning in 2001, the Mobile Foodshare program continues to serve as an outdoor food distribution organization that provides local access to fresh fruits and vegetables for both individuals and families in need.  Currently, 62 Mobile Foodshare sites operate on a bi-weekly rotation.  St. Ann’s Church manages the Avon site.

“Hunger is more prevalent than most people realize, throughout our cities and towns,” said McAdam.  “I was glad to have Representatives LeGeyt and Becker join us at the Mobile Foodshare site in Avon, to help with the distribution of fresh produce to people in need and to see firsthand the number of people needing help.  With the need for food assistance at these high levels, it’s critical that government, private charities like Foodshare, and the larger community all come together to find solutions and ensure that all of our neighbors have access to enough good, healthy food.”

Foodshare’s extensive network of 3,685 dedicated volunteers helps serve 128,000 hungry neighbors living in Greater Hartford, including 50,000 children and 10,000 seniors.  Foodshare distributes enough food to provide more than 10 million meals annually – that’s 16 tons of food per day!
