Time to register for 24th Annual Rotary Club of Avon-Canton Charity Golf Tournament

AVON – The Rotary Club of Avon-Canton invites local residents to enjoy a great day of golf and dining that will help the community at the same time. Registration is currently underway for the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton’s 24th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16 at the Golf Club of Avon.

“We encourage all golf lovers to sign up; you do not have to be a member of our club,” event co-chair Thor Cheyne said. “The event is great fun, and you’ll help us support local, regional and international charities.”

Co-sponsored by Farmington Bank, the event begins at 10 a.m. with registration and cart assignment and ends with a Lobster and Steak Dinner prepared and served by Rotarians at the Avon Community Center.

Following registration, golfers can practice on the driving range and putting green and participate in a challenging putting contest. Lunch will be served by the golf club from 11 a.m. to noon, when the scramble format tournament kicks off with a shotgun start.

The tourney includes a Hole-in-One Contest; Closest to Pin Contests (men and women); Longest Drive Contests (men and women); Low Gross Competition for 1st and 2nd Place; Low Net Competition for 1st and 2nd Place; and “Beat the Pro” on a closest to pin.

Immediately following golf, attendees will head to the Community Center for a reception with hors d’oeuvres and a Lobster and Steak Dinner that includes New England clam chowder, salad, potato, legumes, dessert and coffee. Beer and wine will be served.

Golf prizes will be awarded at the dinner along with the Hole-in-One Super Prize and a Grand Raffle Prize. A silent auction will be conducted and sports memorabilia displayed.

The cost for golfers includes a cart, guest fee, lunch, reception, dinner and a gift bag. Registration can be done online with a credit card. Go to www.RotaryClubofAvon-Canton.org. Forms can also be printed from the website and mailed with checks made payable to Avon-Canton Rotary Community Fund, Inc. to P.O. Box 11, Avon, CT 06001. In the event of unplayable weather, all fees and sponsorships will be treated as donations.

Tournament sponsorships are available at various levels and are described on the website, along with rates for advertising in the club’s golf book. Such opportunities are encouraged as they’re a great way to show an individual’s or company’s support of the community.

The Rotary’s call to action is: Service above Self. Over the course of the past four years, the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton has contributed more than $150,000. Local charities include the Avon and Canton Fuel Banks, Avon and Canton Dollars for Scholars, Avon and Canton Senior Citizens, Avon and Canton Special Needs Funds, Farmington Valley VNA, Farmington Valley YMCA and FAVARH. Regional efforts include Amber Alert, American Heart Association, Foodshare, Gifts of Love, Roaring Brook Nature Center – and many more. Internationally, assistance is given to End Polio Now as well as clean water, hunger and literacy initiatives.
