A Look Ahead: Memorial Day in Avon

Check out Avon's schedule of events to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the country.

Avon will be honoring members of the armed forces who gave their lives defending the country on Monday, May 27. 

Here's a preview of the day's events:

7:30 a.m. - Avon VFW and Color Guard will visit local cemeteries, playing taps and laying wreaths.

11 a.m. - The 68th Annual Memorial Parade begins at the Towpath Annex on Simsbury Road. Stops will be made at the Avon Congregational Church Cemetery,  the Prince Thomas of Savoy Club and will end at Veteran’s Memorial at Avon Park South.

Noon - Memorial service at the Avon Veteran’s Memorial begins.

Speakers will include Father John W. McHugh, Pastor of Saint Ann’s Church in Avon and Past Commander of Avon VFW Post 3272 and Vietnam War veteran Bill Newman, Parade Chairman and Past Commander of Avon’s VFW Post 3272 Bill Samol and Commander of Avon VFW Post 3272 Grant Hagedorn.

The service will take place at the Avon Senior Center at 11 a.m. if the weather is poor.
