Avon Plans Bicycle Route on Scoville Road

Study found that Scoville would be the best place location but work remains.

Avon Town Council members plan to go forward with creating a marked bicycle route on Scoville Road after hearing the results of a study.

The study, done in June by Vanasse Hangen Brustin, Inc., was presented to the council July 11, according to a Hartford Courant article. The study indicated that Burnham and Scoville roads would be best suited for the path.

The council was looking into the best place to establish a bicycle route through Avon, after residents requested it. The route would be marked out with "sharrows" - arrows that indicate motorists must share the road with cyclists.

The firm's study found that, in order to ensure bicyclist safety, better signage would be needed on Scoville, as well as increased police enforcement, according to the Courant. Signage improvements may exceed the $2,500 budget the town allocated for the project.
