Can I Buy Beer in Avon on Memorial Day?

What's open and what's closed on Memorial Day, which is observed this year on Monday, May 27.

Yes, you can buy alcohol on Memorial Day, but check with your local package stores first because some will have shortened hours of operation on the holiday.

Grocery stores and gas stations are also open on Memorial Day, but most government and quasi-government agencies are not.

Last year was the first year, under a new state law to allow Sunday liquor sales, that package stores were also allowed to sell alcohol on holidays as well.

Here's a rundown of what's closed on Memorial Day:

  • Avon Town Hall, along with all federal, state and municipal offices.
  • Banks and credit unions.
  • U.S. financial markets.
  • Avon schools, both public and private.
  • Post offices, including all retail services and regular mail delivery. However, Express Mail, special deliveries and perishable items will be delivered.
  • The Connecticut Lottery Corp. headquarters in Rocky Hill. The website and automated phone system will be available to obtain information. Regularly scheduled lottery drawings will occur.
