Tell Us Your Favorite Running Route; Celebrate the End of Ramadan; Lobstah!; and Other News!

You're invited to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center this morning! Read on to learn about other important news in Avon and the region on Aug. 8.

Why hello there, Avon!

It's Thursday, Aug. 8 and you're a couple days away from a hopefully relaxing weekend.

Some of my most relaxing times are spent not physically relaxing but running. I didn't plan on it, but I went for a two hour run Tuesday. I felt strong, accomplished and tired afterward, but it was a good kind of tired. Okay, so maybe part of the reason for the long run was that I got a little lost on my way back to my new apartment. But I didn't mind because it was an exploratory form of being lost the gave me the opportunity to get to know my new neighborhood. That comes with the territory of finding a new running route.

I made it back through my own limited navigation skills and instinct took me home without needing a GPS or asking for directions! Though one motorist did pull over on a busy main road just to ask me how to get to the mall. Why people stop someone working out to ask for directions instead of running into the nearest business for help, I'll never understand, but hopefully I got the woman and her mother to where they needed to go!

That being said, I wouldn't recommend getting so lost on a run that you can't find your way home. It wouldn't hurt to have a cell phone just in case and you should be particularly alert of your surroundings, especially if you are a woman running by yourself. It also is a good idea to inform someone you know that you're going on a run and the general area you'll be in.

Avon runners, what's your favorite running route? Please share your suggestions for good, safe places to run in the comments! Maybe it will save your fellow runners from getting lost.

Farmington Valley Muslims are celebrating the end of Ramadan Thursday.
After fasting from dawn to sunset for a month, the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center will gather for "its annual Eid ul-Fitr," a "feast of fast breaking," according to a press release from the FVMAMC. The event, open to people of all religious faiths, marks the "first of the two major Muslim holidays in which Muslims exchange social visits and seek to strengthen bonds of brotherhood in the community."

“Our celebration is about coming together as a community and strengthening our bonds,” Khamis Abu-Hasaballah of the FVAMC said in a press release. “We’re excited to share a traditional Muslim celebration with our neighbors and friends in the Farmington Valley community and give them a peek into our culture and traditions.”

The celebration starts at 10 a.m. at the Unionville Lion’s Club's Camp Happy Hill on 87 West Avon Road in Unionville.

Meetings: The Town Council meeting scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8 is canceled, so let's hear it for a night off for your hardworking town officials! The Avon Water Pollution Control Authority meeting is still on though and is scheduled to meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's Chamber in Building 1 of Town Hall at 60 West Main Street.

Lobstah, anyone? If you're like me and obsessed with everything lobster (I can't help it after going to college in Maine!), this might suit your fancy for a Thursday night out. The Grist Mill Restaurant in Avon is offering a New England Lobster Bake every Thursday in August.
