What's Happening with All That Fisher Farm Corn?

If you've driven by the Fisher Farm cornfields lately on Tillotson Road in Avon, you've likely noticed a sea of yellowed, withering husks.

With farmer Ron Simmons' Farmington's lease expired on the farm and his other lease pending until Dec. 31 on the cornfields in Avon, what's happening with the corn?

Avon Town Manager Brandon Robertson said that it won't go to waste.

"That corn will be harvested by the end of October, early November," Robertson said. "That corn is not just going to stand there and rot."

Though some ears of corn seem to be doing just that, as seen in the attached photo gallery.

But while Avon owns the land, the corn is not the town's responsibility. Simmons contracts a man named Dan Loge to plant and harvest his corn, Robertson said.

"It'll be harvested," he said, and picked, possibly to be sold for feed. That has not been confirmed with Simmons at this time.

Robertson plans to put Avon's farmland lease on the Town Council agenda in October. The town's charter requires a public hearing for a lease of this nature, which will likely happen in November. The new lease for the new tenants starts Jan. 1.

The new farmers have not yet signed the Farmington lease for the farm and house.
