Avon High School Students Throw Rock Concert for Charity

Senior Oyere Etta, and juniors Nick Berns and Matt Mascolie, organized the event.

On Friday, Avon High School students rocked for charity in a concert that three students organized to raise relief funds for Japan and money to buy books to donate to Africa.

"We made over $900, and just over $400 will be going to the American Red Cross to aid Japan and just over $400 will be going to Books for Africa," junior Matt Mascolie wrote to Patch in an e-mail.

Juniors Nick Berns and Mascolie, two of the Rock for Charity organizers, had thrown another charity concert before for Disabled Children and Invisible Children. They do it "because they like to play and hate to sit around and feel like they aren't contributing to what is happening around them." The two have been raising funds to contribute to Japan, which just had another major aftershock this week.

Senior Oyere Etta is raising money to combat illiteracy in Africa for her senior project to benefit Books for Africa. Etta said she is frustrated with the rate of illiteracy in Africa and wants to do her part in helping bring knowledge to Africa.

The combined efforts of Etta, Mascolie and Berns brought in close to 150 people at the Rock for Charity. The event included 30 different acts.
