'In From The Edges'

Lisa Corson's mixed media fiber works are featured in the 's Esther Drezner Visitors' Gallery, where In From The Edges runs through July 28.

The works created for In From The Edges reflect how "our lives are defined by where we live, our environment, the people closest to us," says Corson, who reveals: "Sometimes, our lives are shaped most by people we may never meet. We are impacted by lives separate from our own. When we are born, we come into the world with nothing. As we grow, we collect, we nest, we build, and we connect.  We fill our spaces, literal and figurative, with things, with people and with experiences.  Elbow to elbow, edge to edge, we can still remain detached, insulated, compartmentalized. My work seeks to explore these relationships by using color, line, and abstract shape.

Visitors' Gallery hours are noon until 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment.

About the Artist

Lisa Corson grew up in rural Woodstock, Connecticut, and now works from a large studio housed in a barn on a Christmas tree farm in Wolcott, Connecticut. "When I'm not working inside, I'm exploring the area around me," she says. A professionally trained photographer and artist, the self-taught quilter explains: "I am hardly ever without a camera on these walks, often times photographing shapes, textures, and color combinations that appear in nature, and using these photographs to influence my artwork."

Corson's art quilts have been juried into local, national and international shows and have been featured in several books and on postcards. Each art quilt is hand-painted in multiple separate layers with fabric dyes. Sometimes, other media add texture and depth. Once the composition is complete, yards and yards of stitching is added as the final component to delineate shapes and add more texture.
