The Punks and Hippies Tour Stops at the Hessian Lion!

Collinsville's original dance-rock band Mandrake Mechanism will help welcome The Sweet Ones of NYC and The Sacred Mounds of Cape Cod at the Hessian Lion in Avon on Thursday, June 7, for a free show featuring a blend of rock, punk rock and live-band hip hop.

Avon, Conn.-- Borrowing from the lyrics of their 2009 song "Joining the Club" (...Now the hippies are punks, and the punks are hippies/ Doesn’t matter no more, doesn’t matter no more...), The Sweet Ones (Brooklyn) have invited The Sacred Mounds (Wellfleet, Mass.) along for a handful of dates they've dubbed The Punks and Hippies Tour

For their stop at the Hessian Lion (10 East Main St., Avon, CT 860-404-2996) on June 7, Mandrake Mechanism, a Collinsville-based live-band hip-hop project, will also join the bill. The Sweet Ones and Mandrake Mechanism have a connection reaching back to the college days when TSO's Mike Straus, who plays bass guitar, and Mandrake's Matt "Rook" Telford, an MC who is also the band's main songwriter, were students at the University of Hartford.

TSO's Doug Cote, who plays guitar and sings lead vocals, also has a connection to and affection for the area--he attended Avon Old Farms School for a post-graduate year in the '90s, contributing to a lacrosse championship for the renowned prep school.

The Sweet Ones and Mandrake Mechanism have another important Hartford-area connection: both bands recently recorded at Hartford's Casa de Warrenton Recording Studio with producer/engineer Floyd Kellogg, bass player and lead vocalist in You Scream I Scream. TSO's Big Mistakes was released on vinyl in 2011; Mandrake Mechanism's Monetary Artforms will be released early this summer.

The Sweet Ones' official music video for "Carburetor" was filmed at a private location at Trinity College by director Brendan "Spookie" Daly in collaboration with Casa de Warrenton: http://youtu.be/Qdq_2NC2aGY

Thursday's show starts at 9 p.m.; 21+; there's never a cover at the Hessian Lion.
