AEF Awards Three Grants to Avon High School - Totals Over $29,000

The Avon Education Foundation (AEF) awarded three grants during the Prize Patrol held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.  These awards total over $29,000 to support the enhancement of public and community education in the town of Avon.

$13,050 to Avon High School, Technology Education for “Fluid Power Systems Curriculum Development”

Teacher Jim Buys is the recipient of The Stan and Myra Frost Grant.  This grant will enable Mr. Buys to develop a curriculum to introduce technology students to computer controls related to fluid power systems used for industrial applications.  Mr. Buys‘ grant demonstrates innovation by exposing students to hydraulic and pneumatic control systems used by industry and will enable students to develop skills which will directly apply to real life applications.  In addition, this new equipment will also work in conjunction with the CAD/CAM milling machines funded by the AEF in 2012.  The program will also allow educators to collaborate as they develop inter-disciplinary lessons across the science curriculum related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education.  The AEF enthusiastically supports STEM Education in Avon Public Schools.

$9,280 to Avon High School, Physics for “Scientific Principles of Engineering Design - Robotics”

Teacher Greg Dunford is the recipient of The Oh Family Grant.  This grant will create a new science elective course for Grade 12 which will provide students with an opportunity to apply physics concepts to the engineering design process.  The semester will culminate with a large project where students will design, develop and construct a robot to complete a specified task.  The finished products will be tested in an in-class competition.  Mr. Dunford is motivated to develop an opportunity for students to dig deeper into the fields of electronics, basic programing and robotics and apply them through the development of their own design.  Avon High School Physics teachers will collaborate to design this new course and communications are also in place to involve the Technology Education teachers as well.  The AEF strongly supports innovative science education and collaboration amongst educators.

$7509 to Avon High School, Theatre Department for “Avon High School Theatre Technology Improvement”

Teacher Jill Paterson is the recipient of The Monte and Cindy Hopper Grant.  This grant will improve the lighting for all rehearsals and live performances in the Avon High School Auditorium.  Clear com devices and a lighting board will work in tandem with the Intelligent Lighting System, which is already in place, to allow technical theatre students the ability to adjust colors, positions, intensity and focal range of the lighting.  This state-of-the-art technology will be utilized by the auditorium manager, theatre department staff and all technical theatre/drama students.  This equipment will also become a significant component of the proposed elective course entitled Technical Theatre.  The AEF is excited to promote education in the arts and looks forward to the impact this equipment will have on all productions at the High School which will greatly benefit the entire Avon community.

The AEF is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supporting public education in Avon. To learn more about the Foundation, please visit the website, www.avonedfoundation.org.
