Why Avon's AAA Bond Rating is a Great Achievement

Avon's AAA BOND RATING IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT WITH A REAL POSITIVE DOLLAR IMPACT! Avon Republican Leadership is very proud of that achievement.

Long before Avon achieved its highest ranked bond rating the Republican led council and boards in Avon adhered to the wise and basic tenet to invest prudently, plan accordingly and don’t spend recklessly.  Avon’s AAA bond rating is important for two major reasons.

First, it does lower the cost to tax payers of the funds we borrow to fund large capital projects and other town-wide initiatives.  For example, when Avon borrowed the $7.5M to complete the Avon Public Library expansion and renovation (which supplemented $1M state grant sought by Republican leadership and private donations) the lower cost to borrow funds saved us an estimated $130,000 interest savings.

Second, our highest ranking validates that Avon’s financial standing is exceptional because a AAA bond rating is based upon factors such as current assets, liabilities, and infrastructure, as well as future liabilities, like future years contract obligations, borrowing plans, or pension liabilities.  The bond rating also considers policy toward undesignated surplus (savings), policies around increasing that savings (as its measured by a percentage of budget), and how we as a town use that savings for disciplined expenditures versus the tendency of other communities to recklessly use it for everything and anything.
