Registration now open for Avon Summer Theater Programs

The Avon Public School’s Summer Theater Program offers a fun-filled theater experience for students presently in grades 1-12.  The programs are open to Avon residents as well as residents of surrounding towns. The Junior Theater Workshop is developed especially for the elementary/middle school age student (present grades 1-7). This program takes students from the rehearsal process to the performance in two weeks. This summer, students will be presenting The Wizard of Oz.  This version is based on the popular MGM movie with songs "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "If I Only Had a Brain", "Merry Old Land of Oz," and even the "Jitterbug" (omitted from the movie).Workshop dates are July 7-18th , 8:30 am - 2:30 pm, with a performance for friends and family on July 18th at 11 am at Thompson Brook School, Avon.
Casting takes place during the first couple of rehearsals and is designed to fit each child with the perfect role based on their talents and abilities. All participants are cast in the show. The performance on Friday, July 18th at 11:00 am is free and open to the public. Thompson Brook School is air-conditioned.

Avon Summer Theater (AST), for students presently in grades 8-12, offers interested students the opportunity to present a full scale Broadway musical, this summer, RENT, School EditionThis adaptation for high schools has been carefully done, working with the Larson estate to retain the dramatic intent of the groundbreaking rock musical, and consists of some changes to language, and removal of one song ("Contact").  

AST values all aspects of production, onstage as well as behind the scenes. There are two components to our program, On-stage Performers and Technical Theater (behind the scenes). Cast and crew meet daily beginning June 30th , with performances at Avon High School, July 24-27th.

Auditions for major roles: Mark, Roger, Collin, Angel, Benny, Mimi, Joanne, Maureen will be on Tuesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 22nd from 7-9:30 pm. in the Avon High School auditorium.  Interested students need to sign up for an audition appointment on our website.

Casting for smaller roles will be held during the first rehearsal on  Monday, June 30th, 9-2:00 pm. All registered participants are cast in the show.
We are limiting the ensemble to a maximum of 40 cast members (first come, first serve)

We offer a comprehensive training program for students interested in working in the technical side of theater. Tech crew members work under the direction of our Technical Director, Mr. Ken Jones. Crew members are required to attend all scheduled rehearsal and performance times. Our Tech students are fully integrated into the Avon Summer Theater program joining onstage members in spirit week activities and cast/crew celebrations. Please note: our technical component is limited to 20 students on a first come/first serve basis.
