Avon Biz Q&A: My New Wardrobe

As the summer months approach, are you taking your kids shopping for some new clothes?

Susan Macko moved her children's clothing boutique from Riverdale Farms to Avon Village Marketplace last fall.

Macko, 60, a Farmington native and Canton resident, runs My New Wardrobe by the iconic giant rocking chair, near A Cool Chick Place and People's Bank.

The store carries clothing and shoes from the United States and Europe, according to the store website

Patch asked Macko to tell us about her Avon shop and here's what she had to say.

Patch: When did your business open? Is it family-run?

Macko: "The business has been open in its present location since October, 2012. (It was previously located in Riverdale Farms). I have owned the business since the beginning - 2006."

Patch: What services do you offer at your company?

Macko: "We offer many services - probably the most unique is that we will allow customers to take things home on approval. This is because we've learned that it is very difficult to get together with your children! We don't charge you for the items, just ask that you return them within a day or two. We also offer monogramming, alterations, and lots of custom orders - tell us what you can't find, and we'll try and locate it."

Patch: Why did you decide to open in Avon and what made you interested in your field?

Macko: "I've lived in this area most of my life. And while I feel the Valley is a 'melting pot' of tastes (challenging in retail), I love the area. I most enjoy the creativity in fashion and it has really evolved in the past 10 years: many six and seven year-old now have the fashion savvy of teenagers. I like mixing styles and reinventing outfits; in many cases Moms can get two and three years out of some pieces."

Patch: Can you tell us about your business background?

Macko: "I have no formal business background, but have been involved in both wholesale and retail for over 30 years - and mostly in the field of infant/children's clothing. I was a sales rep, designer, and craft show circuit 'artist' before I opened a shop - always reluctant to commit to the hours and demands of retail."

Patch: Finish the sentence. When I'm not working I'm...

Macko: "When I'm not working (but I always am.........), I'd like to garden, advocate for animals, travel (but no time......) and cook."
