Avon Business Buzz: New Senior Living Facility Planned; CREC Extends Security Drive Stay; and More

Read about the latest Avon and region business news.

It's summer, but business is bustling in Avon and the region.

Take a look at highlights of the business news in and near your community:

  • On July 16, the Avon Planning and Zoning Commission approved Avon Village, LLC and LCB Senior Living, LLC's request to build a 74-unit senior living facility at 117 and 121 Simsbury Road across from Riverdale Farms. The applicants also gained the commission's approval to subdivide the land into two lots.
  • After the Capitol Region Education Council's Reggio Magnet School for the Arts moves to its new Waterville location in January of 2014, another CREC magnet school will temporarily move into the 20 Security Drive building owned by Mark Greenberg. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved CREC's request to occupy the space for three more years on July 16. The facility will house the Academy of the Arts Elementary School for pre-kindergarten to fifth-grade students. CREC Executive Director Bruce Douglas said that the school, currently located in Bloomfield is outgrowing its current building. He said that the extension on the Security Drive property was not initially anticipated and that CREC "was asked to open the arts elementary school several months after we received permission to move Reggio into 20 Security Drive."
  • Summer's not over yet. You can still get a job at one of many Farmington businesses. Take a look at who's hiring in Avon and the area. Bertucci's and LensCrafters have some openings, to name a few.
  • Congratulations, Daniel Schwartz on your new gig over at Shipman & Goodwin! Schwartz is an Avon attorney who specializes in employment law and runs a very successful blog called Connecticut Employment Law Blog that is read around the country. Schwartz has also kindly blogged on Avon Patch from time to time.
  • 'The Bear' ate all the FroYoWell, two gallons of it anyways. Competitive eater Jamie “THE BEAR” McDonald ate the TCBY frozen yogurt in 10 minutes and 43 seconds, apparently a world record! That's a lot of brain freeze. We wonder what flavors he chose. So many options at the West Simsbury TCBY in Avon Marketplace!
  • Tory Burch just opened at the Westfarms Mall! Get excited, ladies. Back to school shopping also just got more expensive for teen fashionistas.
