Avon Restaurant Scene Booms

The Local Grill has opened and The Elephant Trail and New England Pasta Company have relocated and others are on the way.

There are nearly always vacant storefronts in any town and lately in Avon many are being filled with restaurants or food businesses, some old and some new.

“It’s nice that we have restaurants all opening at the same time," Avon Town Planner Steven Kushner said.

Good 2 Go has been replaced with Pick & Mix, a Korean restaurant that already has a location on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, under new ownership.

Moe's Southwest Grill and sweetFrog Premium Frozen Yogurt, which both also have locations in West Hartford in the downtown area, are coming soon to adjacent spaces where Spirit Halloween used to be.

Another frozen yogurt place, Yogurt Fantazy moved in over the summer to the 51 East Main St. shopping plaza.

Spirit Halloween, a seasonal costume store that closed for the year two days after Halloween, relocated to the large former TJ Maxx building next to Snap Fitness. But Avon Town Planner Steve Kushner said that the spot will be divided into three storefronts. Whether they could attract new restaurants remains to be seen.

The Local Grill opened this fall for dinner hours in the former Trattoria Il Trullo and Papacelle location in Riverdale Farms and the owners previously said they have plans to have lunch hours when they're more settled in.

Some older restaurant and food businesses in town are expanding and/or relocating.

The Elephant Trail, a popular Thai restaurant that has a sister restaurant in West Hartford Center called The Blue Elephant Trail, has moved into the former Connecticut Home Interior space on Route 44.

New England Pasta Company, which used to have a location next to D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches and another behind Battiston's Fabric Care Specialists, has left those two storefronts and relocated to a bigger space at 300 West Main Street.

Will more restaurants open within the next year in town? Only time will tell.

But one thing Kushner wishes the recent restaurant boom in Avon does mean is that “hopefully we're working our way out of the recession here."

What do you think? Does a restaurant influx mean an improving economy? Which new restaurants would you like to see in town? Have you visited any of the new ones that have opened? Tell us about your experience in the comments!
