Avon’s Elephant Trail Gets New York Times Review

Elephant Trail, the traditional Thai restaurant in Avon Village Marketplace got some good press this weekend when it was featured in the New York Times’ New York edition.

The family-owned restaurant, which has been in the Avon Village for more than six years, was given a “good” review by the paper, which reviews upscale and unique restaurants around Connecticut. Ratings include poor, fair, good, very good and excellent.

The reviewer calls Elephant Trail's blending of traditional seasonings such as ginger, garlic, lime juice, lemon grass, coconut milk and basil “successful” and said that its Yum larb, a salad with beef, and Yum woon sen, a salad with pork and rice noodles, reflect “finesse.”

But the reviewer laments that many of the appetizers are served in a “cloyingly sweet” sauce and says that the yum pla muek and several entrees are also affected by overt sweetness.

Still, the Times praises a few more dishes.

The kai ka-pan is “a delicious panoply of ground chicken, minced onion, garlic, lemon grass and jalapeños” with an “edge of salty-spiciness.”

And the ginger crispy duck is “robust” and “sublimely tender.”
