(Updated: 8:59 p.m.) Event Cancellations and Closures in Avon This Weekend

The town has already announced that some of its establishments will be closed this weekend due to Hurricane Irene, and there may be more business closures and event cancellations to come.

Update, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, 8:59 p.m.

Avon's schools, school offices and central office will be closed Monday, meaning that new student orientations at and will be rescheduled for the morning of the first day of school, which is currently Tuesday.

The will be closed Sunday and will reopen Monday depending on the damage.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is asking everyone to stay off the roads after this evening. There has been no traffic ban yet, but Malloy is considering one.

Hurricane Irene, which Geoff Fox, of Fox News, reported will likely be worse than Hurricane Gloria of 1985 on Sunday when it hits Connecticut, but not as bad as the Hurricane of 1938.

That could affect worship service and Mass schedules on Sunday for local churchgoers.

  • on Country Club Road has canceled services for Sunday. "With Hurricane Irene making its way to Connecticut this Sunday we have decided to encourage folks to stay home and safe rather than venturing out on Sunday morning in the midst of the weather," a notification on its website, www.westavonchurch.com. "There will be no church services or acitivites this Sunday August 28th."
  • on West Avon Road in Avon has not canceled Sunday services yet, but there is a notification on its website, avonunitedmethodist.com, stating that parish members should check the website on Sunday to "for news of church closing due to the hurricane."
  • Sunday worship services are canceled at on Route 44.
  • has canceled its Sunday worship services. 

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy may make a travel ban in light of the hurricane, and updates will be provided as announced.

In preparation for Hurricane Irene, the town has already decided to close some of its establishments that are normally open on weekends.

What's Closed?

  • is closed on Sunday, but will remain open from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The scheduled for Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is still on.
  • Avon Historical Society sites, including Pine Grove School House, and the will be closed on Sunday.

What Events are Canceled?

  • Avon High School theater director Doreen Cohn is directing the musical, "Curtains" for the Theater Guild of Simsbury. The first rehearsal scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled. For any locals in the play, the first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday from 7 to 9:45 p.m. at ENO Memorial Hall in Simsbury Center on Route 10.

What's Open?

The following will remain open unless there is state or federal evacuation order.

  • Historical Society members will be selling Cow Chip Raffle tickets on Saturday at Walmart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
