The opening of the Bishops Corner restaurant occurred well ahead of schedule.

It didn't take look for burger-crazy West Hartford residents to find out that Five Guys opened for business on Monday. Even students returning late Sunday evening from a 10-day Conard/Hall trip to Europe had already heard the rumors.

"We just opened a couple of hours ago," Five Guys District Manager John Zinser said around 1 p.m. Monday, standing inside the new Bishops Corner restaurant that was already filled with diners.

"We don't advertise, no media blast," Zinser said. The Bishops Corner location is corporate-owned, and like other corporate-owned locations, relies on word-of-mouth to spread news about openings.

When Five Guys signed the lease and began final plans for the Bishops Corner store last October, July was the target date for opening.

"Things got moved up," was all Zinser said about the surprise April 22 opening.

Lucy Carlson, Joanne Heckman, and Craig Mangold were some of the first customers at the West Hartford Five Guys. They pronounced their lunch of burgers and fries "consistent and good."

Anthony Ciraulo had his first-ever Five Guys burger on Monday. The West Hartford resident said that his daughter and grandchildren are fans, and he decided to check it out for himself. "Noisy but good" was his review of the West Hartford restaurant.

Five Guys is located at 316 North Main St. in Bishops Corner and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Online orders can be placed through fiveguys.com.
