Simsbury Bicycle Sculpture Dedicated at Ceremony

Group raised $10,000 to purchase sculpture.

The town of Simsbury and the local bicycling advocacy group Bike Walk Simsbury held a dedication ceremony on Friday for a new bicycle sculpture made by local artist Vicente Garcia. The sculpture was installed at the Wilcox Place commuter parking lot last week.

Ann Marie Potter, who spearheaded the fundraising effort to purchase the sculpture, announced that the Bike Walk Simsbury group has raised approximately $10,000 with the help of local businesses and individual donors.

"It's important to acknowledge the spirit of generosity among us and it's not always financial," Potter said.

Donors include , , REI West Hartford, , Rick and Carol Wagner, Barbara Chase, and Mark Scully. Another donor, Martin Hubble C., christened the sculpture with a bottle of champagne.

Other businesses and individuals contributed to the fundraising effort and sponsored events during National Bike Month in May.

First Selectman Mary Glassman said the sculpture is representative of the town's status as the first bike-friendly community in the state.

"More importantly it's really a symbol of community," Glassman said. Without the volunteer efforts of individuals, organizations, and businesses, Glassman said the town wouldn't have achieved its bronze level status with the League of American Bicyclists.

Bike Walk Simsbury is still accepting donations for anyone wishing to have their name added to the bike sculpture plaque. Additional donations will benefit CT Adaptive Cycling, a Simsbury non-profit organization that offers the use of recumbent bicycles and hand cycles for persons with disabilities.

The town of Simsury now has a Sculpture to the pagan god of Peor Baal ..(.Numbers... Chapter 25 1-4...31-16) brought to you by the Board of Selectman who gave this Bicycle group the town or state land for it to be placed on without a public hearing. The tax payers of Simsbury have been paying for the bicycle group with tax dollars and in kind town services via the Board OF Selectman to my knowedge the War veterans have not received a nickel like promised. State law reads 85 percent to the charity which we been told is the veterans C.A.M.P. Military Ambulation project and fifteen percent to group collecting money were is the money in my opinion the Simsbury Bike Sculpture Group is keeping all the money and the Veterans C.A.M.P. have not received their 85 percent of the $10,000 as the law provides .
