TEAZD Hair Salon Expands Space

Chair rental salon adds six new stylists to booming business.

After three successful years as a cutting edge hair salon at The Shops at Avon Green, TEAZD has announced an expansion.

The chair rental salon, which allows stylists the freedom of running their own small business, has recently added six new stylists, for a total of 12 in all. Each stylist runs an independent business, renting a chair from the salon, explained Emily Noreika, the owner of TEAZD.

After the business next door (Better Giving by Kipling) closed its doors, TEAZD broke through the wall and added an extra 1,000 square feet. They added a new entryway, lit by large chandeliers hanging from a red ceiling. Comfy couches and space for refreshments are in the new waiting area. A makeup and nail station are in the new section as well.

Noreika said all services are a la carte and include the usual cut, blow-dry and highlight services. The salon also offers hair coloring, chemical straightening and Brazilian blow-outs (a hair straightening technique that starts at $250). In addition, several stylists are available to travel for weddings or special occasions to provide hair and makeup services. Stylist Cheryl Briere offers nail services.

The stylists create their own schedules and sell their own products, such as Moroccan Oil, Bed Head, AG, Minardi, KMS, Lanza, Paul Mitchell and Sebastian.

In a recent “Best of Patch” poll about hair salons in the Farmington Valley, TEAZD came in second place, with 18 percent of the vote. In the comments section on Patch, several clients had significant praise for the stylish salon:“[There's] only one word to describe the staff, FABULOUS,” wrote Sarah Biggsby.

“Very warm environment and I feel right at home. I leave smiling every time,” said Michelle Dublay.

The stylists pride themselves on supporting the community and participating in fundraisers for charitable causes. On Sept. 30, after a client who attends Avon High School said she wanted to raise money for breast cancer research, TEAZD stylists decided to hold a fundraiser, called “Go Pink for a Purpose Day.” For $20, stylists offered to streak hair pink. They also solicited local businesses for raffle prizes. Noreika said $4,000 was raised for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“The chair rental salon is a popular trend now,” noted Noreika, who previously worked at salons in Simsbury and Canton and was trained at the Torrington Beauty Academy. After saving money for years to buy a house, the then 22-year-old instead decided to open TEAZD in November 2009.

“Business is booming,” she said, adding that many stylists at TEAZD currently have a full load of clients.

“We’ve been so lucky,” said Noreika.
