Hoke co-founded Mintz + Hoke Advertising in 1971 along with Alan Mintz. They had one goal: combine smart strategy with wild and crazy creative. In just three years, Mintz + Hoke earned the reputation as the top creative agency in Connecticut, and one of the top agencies in New England.

To make the creative product more effective, Hoke created a brand-positioning model that worked in every consumer and B2B category. It was so effective, several agencies and one of the country’s largest insurance companies “adopted” it.

Under Joe Hoke’s leadership, Mintz + Hoke’s work produced exceptional results, winning more national EFFIE awards (awarded for advertising effectiveness) than any other New England agency and many of New York’s largest shops. Notably, this included earning the top award for packaged goods, beating work for major brands like Pepperidge Farms and Jell-O.

Hoke also helped the firm compete and win new accounts over Boston and New York agencies. As a result, during his tenure, Mintz + Hoke added major accounts such as Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, Mohegan Sun, YoCrunch Yogurt and a new product launch for LEGO. The agency then competed outside the region to win clients like Olympic Stain in Pittsburgh, CertainTeed in Philadelphia and Shaw’s Supermarkets in Boston.

The agency has been featured in many national publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Communication Arts, Advertising Age, Adweek and Inside PR.

Hoke retired from Mintz + Hoke at the end of 1999, having created an enduring agency with a strategic and creative culture that embodies the ideas he instilled under his distinguished leadership. Currently, he works as a marketing communications consultant and paints landscapes in Collinsville, Connecticut.
