[Update] Nine Avon Residents Remain without Power

CL&P continues to work on restoring power.

Update, Sept. 1, 2011, 2:54 p.m.

If any residents still do not have water, or hot water, and need a shower, Sycamore Park on West Avon Road is offering up its shower facilities from 3 to 6 p.m. through Friday. Residents are asked to tell the gatekeeper they are looking for a shower facility.

The Marriott-Residence Inn on 55 Simsbury Road is also offering showers at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. If you are in need of a shower facility, inquire about it at the front desk and bring your own towels and toiletries. Remember, the town of Avon "is not responsible for lost/damaged items."

Water is also available at Avon Volunteer Fire Department Company One during regular business hours.

Update, Sept. 1, 2011, 11:37 a.m.

According to the Connecticut Light and Power outage map, there only nine people in Avon left without power.

Original Story

The town of Avon has made significant process in storm cleanup in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

Burnham, Old Farms and Tillotson roads reopened Wednesday, and Deercliff Road and Winding Lane are also passable.

Barricades and "road closed" signs still blocked a portion of Winding Lane Wednesday morning. A tree fell across a driveway and branches are suspended on a power line. The roadway was not blocked by the debris, so that did not stop an Avon school bus from going around the barriers to continue on its bus route to bring elementary school children to their first day of classes.

Downed trees and damaged wires across town caused over 1,800 power outages in Avon for Connecticut Light & Power customers Sunday. Many of those residents were in the Burnham Road area off of Country Club Road, and since yesterday, power was restored for around 300 people. Forty-nine percent remain without power, according to the CL&P outage map.

There is no longer flooding on Old Farms and Tillotson roads and most of the water previously covering Fisher Meadows has receded, however, there is still some flooding on Avon Old Farms School fields.

While Winding Lane was completely open for travel, power lines still dipped low near 146 Winding Lane. The downed wire has affected three or four houses in the area over the past few days.
