April Fool's Day, Harlem Ambassadors, Meet Cocoa and Letters to the Editor

Five things to know about April 1, 2011.

The Avon Police Department is hosting a Meet Cocoa Day at the Avon Canine Shelter to thank the members of the community who donated money to fund a local dog's medical expenses. Many people have been asking about how Cocoa the springer spaniel is doing, so this is an opportunity to see he is doing well. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon, and Petals and Paws of Canton will be there handing out coupons.

People may have seen the Harlem Ambassadors do slam dunks, but what about local teachers. Teachers and members of the community have formed a team to go up against the Ambassadors to raise money for Avon Dollars for Scholars. The event starts at 2 p.m. at Avon High School. Tickets cost $5 for students and $8 for adults. If you buy a ticket at the door, the price will go up slightly to $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.

Avon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Michael Trick was the only one to respond with an April Fool's Day story. Have you heard of this story? Can you top it?

"On April 1, 1989 WCCC told the world that there was a volcano erupting on Avon Mountain," he wrote. "It caused a traffic jam of people trying to get a look. I heard it was a site to see. After a short time they demanded the station tell everyone that it was a hoax. Just shows that people will believe anything."
