Avon Photo of the Day: Bobcats Spotted by Rivermead Condos

Avon Patch reader Peter Hayes shared this photo of one of three bobcats he saw early January.

Avon Patch reader Peter Hayes saw some rare visitors to the Rivermead condominium complex the first week in January.

He saw three bobcats emerge from the woods Jan. 7 for an afternoon stroll at the snow-covered setting, possibly a mother and her full-grown offspring.

"The one thought that came to mind was that I could wait multiple lifetimes to ever have the chance to see three of these beautiful reclusive animals at the same time," Hayes said. "I was working at my desk next to the sliding doors and slowly picked up my camera to avoid startling them. As soon as I raised my hand to take the picutres all three turned there heads towards me noticing the movement of just my hand raising up to take the pictures."

Rivermead is off of Waterville Road, not far from Avon Mountain.

Hayes said the bobcats were following rabbit tracks in the snow.

Bob, if the bobcat comes back (and it's safe), snap a photo and either upload it to avon.patch.com/pics or email it to me at Jessie.Sawyer@patch.com. Thanks! I've never seen one up close, but my college mascot was a bobcat. That has to count for something right? Jessie Sawyer Editor, Avon Patch

My husband looked out the kitchen window and saw a large cat standing next to the rear tire of his car. He called me over and we both realized we were looking at a bobcat. About 15 feet from our front door. Scary.

I had one walk right along the sidewalk along the front wall, and past the front door of my condo! I was too shocked to get a photo, and in awe of seeing it! What a beautiful animal! I am only glad there was the glass window between us!!!!
