Civil War Tribute, Free Blood Pressure Screenings, Men's and Women's Groups and Letters to the Editor

Five things to know about April 11, 2011.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Avon Free Public Library and Avon Historical Society are co-sponsoring a program hightlighting the contributions of Union and Confederate women at 1 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center. Bloomfield resident Jo Hansling will lead the program and discuss quilt samples on display. To register for the program, call 860-673-9712 or go to www.avonctlibrary.info.

There are free blood pressure screenings at the senior center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., sponsored by the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurses Association. Call the senior center with any questions at 860-675-4355.

"We're men, manly men..." is a catchy Robinhood Men in Tights tune, and Monday night, men will have opportunities to talk amongst themselves and get to know other men in the community at the senior center's Men's Group. Social work intern Ron Michaud will lead the meeting, which happens bi-monthly and goes from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
