Five Things to Know on the First Day of Summer

Five things to know on June 21, 2011.

  1. The weather is supposed to hit 83 degrees Fahrenheit, at the warmest, and the National Weather Service is predicting a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.
  2. Hopefully the weather will hold for the Avon High School graduation, but if not, commencement will take place in the new gym. The event starts at 5:30 and the football field gates open at 4 p.m., so get there early to find a parking spot and claim your chairs.
  3. Avon Assistant Superintendent Jody Goeler announced to staff and faculty Friday that he will be leaving the school district and Monday he was appointed as the new superintendent in Region 14. His first day is Aug. 15, so he will be around until the district finds a replacement or interim assistant superintendent.
  4. The Avon Board of Education meeting has been moved to June 28 because of graduation.
  5. The town's summer hours started on Monday. Now town offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays. Until Aug. 27, the library will be open from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. and closed July 2. Weekday hours go from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. The library bookdrop is always open.
