Great Escape: Immerse Yourself In The Past

Noah Webster House hosts Tavern Nights — an evening of food, drink and entertainment in the spirit of a simpler time.

A true escape can transport you to another world – or a long-ago time before the technology and other distractions of modern day society.

The offers several Tavern Nights throughout the winter season. Billed as an evening of food, drink and entertainment, "Tavern Night brings visitors back to a simpler time – delicious home-cooked foods, traditional beverages, tavern games, and early American music make the night.” Food and drink are served by Noah Webster House volunteers clad in traditional colonial garb.

There are two more in this year’s series. Friday, March 11, will feature a live performance by Rick Spencer, a “historian, researcher, singer, songwriter, and performer of music in the American folk tradition.” Spencer accompanies his upbeat musical repertoire on the guitar or banjo.

On Saturday, March 12, Cece Borjeson and Ruth George will perform their unique version of “songs of love, songs of war and peace, of hearth and home, and of the people from the American West to the Celtic Isles.” Their singing is accompanied by guitar, harmonica and pennywhistle, as well as several unique percussion instruments.

A “Taste of Ireland” is the food theme for both nights. Each night features two separate seatings – either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. Following dinner and music, guests have the opportunity to test their skill at several 18th Century tavern games, including Skittles, Captain’s Mistress, and Shove Ha’penny.
