Horse Guard Campaign, Water Mains and Blood Pressure Screening

Five things to know on April 25, 2011.

The First Company Governors Horse Guard is mounting a campaign to save its historic cavalry unit from the budget axe. The state legislature’s Appropriations Committee has voted to merge the First Company with the Second Company Governors Horse Guard at the latter’s facility in Newtown. If the budget is approved with that provision, it’s not clear what would happen to the First Company’s 150-acre property in Avon.

Water main flushing resumes today. The Avon Water Company describes the area affected as Avon Park South and streets off Old Farms Road as well as Route 44 east of 60 West Main St., including all of East Main Street; and Waterville Road (Route 10), including Avon Place Apartments, River Mead and Old Avon Village. The water company suggests that residents draw drinking water before 7:30 a.m. and avoid doing laundry because the water may be discolored.

The Board of Finance meeting tentatively scheduled for tonight has been canceled. The board finished its budget deliberations April 6 and approved a $74.5 million budget proposal. That proposal goes to a town meeting May 2 at the Avon Senior Center and to referendum on May 11.

The Farmington Valley VNA will perform free blood-pressure screening today at the Avon Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call the Avon Senior Center at 860-675-4355 for more information.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.8 percent of Avon’s population is over the age of 85. That compares to 2.2 percent in Connecticut and 1.7 percent nationwide. The data comes from the 2005-2009 American Community Survey.
