[Update] How Will Eight Days of Cancellations Affect the Avon School Calendar?

The Board of Education will discuss the school calendar at its Nov. 15 meeting.

Avon students have already missed eight days of school total because of Tropical Storm Irene and the power outages and wreckage from the October nor'easter.

Staff lost an additional two days.

How will the district make up these days?

The Board of Education will discuss a revised calendar for the 2011-2012 school year at its Nov. 15 meeting at 7 p.m. at Avon High School.

"Given the extraordinary circumstances and days missed, I have to look at all available options," Superintendent Gary Mala said.

The board's policy committee will meet immediately before at 6 p.m.

Current school board policy dictates that if there are more than five snow days, those additional days will be made up and taken out of April vacation. However, given that winter has not officially started and the circumstances are extreme, administrators will look at the possibility of making up for up to eight student days and 10 staff days.

Connecticut law requires public schools to be in session for 180 days per school year. The state Department of Education has not announced any exceptions to this law at this time.

Mala is going to present a proposal for adjusting the school calendar to the school board at its meeting, including a plan for make-up days, when to reschedule parent-teacher conferences, extending the current marking period and other necessary changes.

Final decisions have not been announced at this time.

Editor's Note: Avon Public Schools lost eight student days and 10 staff days to Tropical Storm Irene and the October nor'easter, not nine student days as originally reported because Avon schools do not normally have class on Election Day. This reporting error has been corrected. This article was updated at 10:21 a.m. on Nov. 15.
