Madison Kennedy, 24, Swims for London Olympics Qualification

The former Avon High School swimmer has advanced to Saturday's finals in the 100-meter freestyle and has the 50-meter free on Sunday.

Former Avon resident , 24, has her second shot at qualifying for the Olympic Games in London this weekend as she competes in swim trials for the 50 and 100 free.

"@AvonPatch Start sending some luck tomorrow morning for my 100 free prelims and I <3 AVON," Kennedy tweeted to Patch and her Avon fans on Thursday.

Kennedy placed sixth (54.45) in the 100 free semifinals at U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, NE Friday night and has advanced to Saturday's finals, according to omegatiming.com. She was three hundredths of a second ahead of her friend and role model Natalie Coughlin, a past Olympian and world record holder for the 100 backstroke.

The top two in each event will qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team, as well as the top six in the 100 and 200 free for relays, Kennedy previously told Patch. Wayne Drehs, a sportswriter for Bristol-headquartered ESPN, wrote that he believes this will be one of the toughest women's swimming events to qualify for because of all the American legends competing against each other.

But Kennedy's strongest race is the 50 free, which is scheduled for Sunday, July 1 at 10 a.m., Omaha time, according to omaha.com.

She placed ninth in the 50 free at the 2008 Olympic Trials and 13th in the 100 free.

“The fastest swimming in the world is done at Olympic Trials,” Kennedy previously said. “I think it’s one of the coolest meets ever and it will be really great to see how much I improve from my performance last time.”

Kennedy not only won the 50-meter freestyle in the Grand Prix at the Indiana University Natatorium in April, but she also set a new meet record, 24.99, according to theswimmingcircle.com.

Avon fans are rooting for her and she should know before the 4th of July whether she qualifies to go to London.
