Public Works Reports Safe Roads; Multiple Minor Accidents During Slippery Morning

Avon Police responded to seven accidents between 7:20 a.m. and just after 8 a.m.

There were seven accidents Thursday morning between 7:20 a.m. and just after 8 a.m., Avon police reported, mostly because of icy roads.

The Avon Police Department Records Division confirmed that all accidents were minor and that no injuries were reported. All roads that were closed are reopened.

"The accidents were minor in nature due to icing conditions on the roads," Avon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Michael Trick said. "They were mostly on the West End of town."

Old Farms Road was closed at the Tillotson Road and Waterville Road entry points because of a car that went off the road near Fisher Meadows, according to a fire department member and 1st Responder Wireless News dispatcher.

There were two other car accidents on the road, and Avon police records department representatives said that because they happened in succession, the police were able to respond quickly.

Police also reported two accidents on Huckleberry Hill Road, as well as one on Hollister Road and another on Burnham Road, though that one was not ice-related, said Paul Welsh, Avon Public Works Department highway foreman.

"There wasn't a lot of icing immediately. The majority of the night there were no complaints," he said. "Between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., there a few areas in town that were damp from the [overnight] snow and froze up. It was isolated to a few roads."

Public Works "applied salt to all roadways and checked them," starting at 7 a.m. and "wrapping up salting around 9 a.m.," Welsh said.
