NCCC Boys Basketball Finals, National Read Across America Week, UberBots, Whiz Kids

Five things to know about March 3, 2011.

Wednesday was the National Education Association's Read Across America Day, which is celebrated on Dr. Seuss' birthday and Patch is making a list of book suggestions for continued encouragement to read. There are many titles not on the list, so please make more suggestions in the comments.

We're still looking for submissions for readers to nominate a Whiz Kid and would like to honor Avon's talented children and teenagers. High school students are also eligible. Send nominations to Jessie.Sawyer@patch.com, and please include the name, age, accomplishment, key to success and a photo. Here's a model of our first feature, selected by the Patch staff.

Connecticut Light and Power recently awarded the Avon High School UberBots robotics team with a $500 grant. The is available online.

Nunnally Johnson, writer, producer and director of How to Marry a Millionaire and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit also created The Three Faces of Eve, which will be featured at the Avon Senior Center as part of the Avon Free Public Library's Thursday Movie Matinee series. The story line, based on a ture story and a book with the same title by Corbett H. Thigpen, is about a woman with multiple personality disorder. Reader's Digest recommends this book. The film stars JoAnne Woodward, David Wayne and Lee J. Cobb, and will being at 1:30 p.m.

The Avon High School boys varsity basketball team has advanced to the 33-24 on Tuesday. Tip off will be at 7 p.m. at Enfield High School, located at 1264 Enfield Street.
