Passover, School Vacation, Help Grant a Wish

Five things to know on April 19, 2011.

Today is the first day of Passover, the Jewish holiday marking the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, and tonight is the traditional time for the Seder dinner. If you are looking for a way to celebrate, join one of the community Seder dinners tonight at Chabad of Greater Hartford in West Harford, the Chabad Jewish Center in Glastonbury and Chabad of the Valley in Simsbury. They are open to all. Find more details in our events calendar. And to our Jewish visitors, Chag Sameach from Patch.

Students sleep in. Teachers rejoice. The April school vacation has begun for Avon public schools. It was originally supposed to start Monday, but six snow days meant one less day of April vacation. Spring sports continue this week, however, with games and matches scheduled through Thursday.

The Avon Police Department aims to raise $1,000 for the Make a Wish Foundation by participating in the Annual Hero Parade in Fairfield on May 14. Your pledge can help meet that goal and help the foundation with its mission to grant the wishes of children facing life-threatening medical conditions. Visit the department's team page to contribute.

This is the second and final day of water main flushing at Farmington Woods. The Avon Water Company suggests that residents draw drinking water before 7:30 a.m. and avoid doing laundry because the water may be discolored.
