Five things you need to know about Avon on Jan. 25, 2011

School is delayed Tuesday by 90 minutes by another snowfall. Morning kindergarden has been canceled.

Kudos to the four officers who recently received promotions in the   They are:  Jean Barton to Lieutenant, Fire Police Company; Pat Leonard to Lieutenant, Company 1;  Diane Taylor to Lieutenant, Company; and Michael Hornish to Lieutenant, Company 3. 

The has a couple of afternoon programs on Tuesday for elementary school children. From 2:45 p.m.to 4 p.m. B.Y.O.S (Bring Your Own Snack) Story time for Grades 1-3 will offer a story and craft, all while participants munch on their personal favorite snack foods.  For children in grades 4 to 6, the Nutmeg Book Club will be discussing Iron Thunder by Avi.  That program runs from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. You can register for both at the Avon Library.

sports teams are busy today.  The boys junior varsity (JV) and varsity basketball teams will be at home against Ellington at 3:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  The girls junior varsity (JV)  and varsity basketball teams will also play Ellington, but on Ellington’s turf.  Those games are at 3:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. as well.  You can see photos of the varsity girls’ close victory over Norwich Free Academy last Saturday night on . And coed varsity swimming will face Litchfield High School at Miss Porter’s pool at 7 p.m.
