School Board, Planning and Zoning, Water Main Flushing

Five things to know on April 26, 2011

Water main flushing continues in the center of town. Today the Avon Water Company is cleaning out the water system in Avon Park North and streets off  Simsbury Road (Route 10) as well as the Mountain View Avenue area, including Rosewood Road, Castlewood Road, Blueridge Drive and Adams Road. The water company suggests that residents draw drinking water before 7:30 a.m. and avoid doing laundry because the water may be discolored.

The Board of Education meets tonight at 6 in the Community Room at Avon High School for an executive session to discuss collective bargaining, according to the agenda. The special session will be followed by the regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. On the agenda is the superintendent’s recommendations for a “reduction scenario,” outlining cuts in the proposed 2011-12 school budget to meet nearly $847,000 in reductions ordered by the Board of Finance.

The Planning & Zoning Commission meets at 7:30 p.m at Avon Town Hall. The commission will hold hearings on three applications: for a special exception to permit a restaurant at 177 West Main St., for a zone change at 230 Old Farms Road and for a special exception to allow a self-storage facility on that property.

The Avon Police Department is asking for your help to fulfill the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses. The department will participate in the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut Walk for Wishes Hero Parade on May 14 in Fairfield. Make a donation in the name of the police team on its fundraising page.

The First Company Governor’s Horse Guards is also looking for help. The cavalry unit wants to keep its headquarters in Avon and is asking the public to contact state legislators to express their support. The state legislature’s Appropriations Committee voted last week to consolidate the First Company with the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard at the latter’s Newtown headquarters.
