School Board Recap and Horse Guards Alzheimer's Search and Rescue Training

Five things to know about March 16, 2011.

Avon Superintendent of Schools Gary Mala participated in his first Board of Education Tuesday as the new district chief.

Rep. Brian Becker (D-19), who represents Avon, Farmington and West Hartford, attended, as well, to visit and invite the board members to ask him any questions. He reported that the "good news for municipalities" with the proposed 2011-12 state budget is that the state is level funding Education Cost Sharing funds, making up for the loss in federal funding that was previously backing a portion of the grants.

He also mentioned that he has heard rumors that reimbursement to towns that house Open Choice students may increase from $2,500 per student to $4,000.

The Avon Education Foundation announced four new issued. According to a press release from the Avon Education Foundation, Thompson Brook School was awarded "$30,172 to give classrooms access to 21st Century technology," Avon High School math teacher Tracy Andreana was awarded "The Flaxman Family Grant of $2,174 to purchase a portable document camera for the math department," the Roaring Brook School Media Center and Linda Miller received" $1,941 from The Robert, Brian & Matthew Duffy Grant to purchase a mobile overhead projector set-up," and Jennifer Bennett, Avon Senior Center coordinator, was awarded "The Mary Durant Grant of $1,500 to pilot an iPad technology intergenerational learning program at the center."

As part of their equestrian search and rescue training, Major Michael Downes and First Sergeant Bree Berner of the First Company Governor's Horse Guards completed a certification course this past weekend "as instructors in , a very specialized search and rescue, giving the troop greater resources and training in this area," according to a press release from the Horse Guards.
