School Budget Presentation, Connecticut Science Award Winners, Shoe Drive and More

Five things to know about March 21, 2011.

The Coalition of Citizens for Avon is holding its first 2011-2012 Board of Education budget campaign meeting on Monday, March 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Avon High School cafeteria.  The coalition will discuss  what is "currently known about the budget and how to participate in the campaign to support it," according to a media advisory about the event. At 7 p.m., all of the Avon Public Schools Parent Teacher Organizations are sponsoring a presentation and review of Avon's proposed school district budget in the cafeteria. An Avon native and four Talcott Academy of Science, Mathematics, and Technology students scored in the top three for their categories at the final day of the 63rd annual Connecticut Science Fair held at Quinnipiac University. Shubhro Saha, an Avon resident and a senior at Choate in Wallingford, was the runner-up in the Grade 9 to 12 Dominion Physical Sciences category.

Talcott Academy eighth grade students Peter P. Baczyk and David P. Marchena were awarded second place ribbons for their categories, and their classmate, Brendan Forbes took third place. Gwynne T. There are still slots open at for children ages 3 to 5 for the fall session, which runs from September to December.Joan Parks, nursery school director, at 860-678-1267 or director@avonnurseryschool.org. The nursery school also has a website.

Children's boutique , located at Riverdale Farms on Simsbury Road, is holding a shoe drive to benefit SOLES4SOULS® Inc., which "has committed to collect and distribute 11 million shoes in 2011 to people living in extreme poverty and recovering from natural disasters," according to a press release from the store. The drive runs until April 15, and "new or gently worn shoes" can be dropped off at the store. Monetary donations are also being accepted.
