School Canceled Monday in Avon

Superintendent Gary Mala made the announcement Sunday night.

Avon Public Schools will be closed Monday in the aftermath of the weekend blizzard.

However, staff members are asked to report at the regular time, Avon Superintendent Gary Mala wrote to Patch in an email.

MB February 11, 2013 at 01:33 AM
Thank you superintendent Mala for the timely cancelation... NOT. What do you know now at 8:00 that you didn't know at noon!!!!!!
Pam February 11, 2013 at 01:51 AM
Shame on Gary for not doing his job so our children can get a full day of school. Private, money making businesses gets their doors open, and unfortunately Gary does not seem to get it; that our tax payers dollars are not at his discretion in how he runs the school district. Gary must go.
Seans February 11, 2013 at 02:03 AM
I agree with Pam and Steve. Hoping Gary can provide child care tomorrow. Do not understand why roads/weather are ok to have all of the teachers report to work but not okay to have the kids there to teach???
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:09 AM
stop whiining. these guys are busy plowing town roads. the kids may be off on thur or fri due to another nor'easter headed for avon. besides, non essential state ees are staying home. this storm was huge and besides, they're expecting sleet and freezing rain in the am.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:13 AM
it's suppose to sleet tomorrow in the am. practically every town is cancelling. send your kids to a private school.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:18 AM
stop whining. the gov is encouraging businesses to be closed. state ees are staying home. wait until we get some real disasters and the kids stay home for a week.
Mark Zacchio February 11, 2013 at 02:19 AM
There was a comment here with a Rumor the High School Parking lot was not plowed, in an effort to quash that rumor, it in fact is cleared.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:20 AM
blame mother nature. the kids will probably party
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:26 AM
latest is the nat weather service issued a warning stating slick road conditions from 6am - 11am. it is better to have the kids safe than sorry. i often hear people whining as to why school was NOT cancelled. gary is doing a great job. pam and mb-- could you do better---NOT!
Pam February 11, 2013 at 02:34 AM
Actually I could. You deserve everything you accept.
Ali C February 11, 2013 at 05:25 AM
I agree with Superintendent Mala's decision to cancel school. Have you seen the roads? Many of them are just one lane, with the snow piles at 8, 9, 10 feet. Where do you expect the kids to wait for busses? Their bus stops are buried. Not to mention the weather forecast for tomorrow. Would you want your child on a bus tomorrow morning? Can you imagine the backlash if a child were injured on the way to school tomorrow? I certainly don't envy that kind of responsibility. Yes, the decision was made late in the day, but how was anyone supposed to know exactly how much progress the plows would make throughout the day? Again, imagine the complaining had he cancelled school at noon, only to have our plow crews make significant progress throughout the day. Of all the things to complain about, why not stop and be thankful that we have power, that our streets have even SEEN a plow, or that our community has not suffered any fatalities? Not everyone is quite so lucky in our state tonight.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 10:27 AM
ALI--- right on!!!! WE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR NO LIVES NOR POWER LOSSES. THE GOV ENCOURAGED FOLKS TOO STAY HOME. AS FOR CHILD CARE, I WOULD NOT WANT TO WATCH ANY OF YOUR KIDS THEY'RE PROBABLY WHINERS). WAIT UNTIL WE GET A REAL DISASTER THAT HITS AVON. THE WEATHER CHANNEL IS PREDICTING WILD WEATHER FOR THIS SPRING. ps: PEOPLE WERE JUST ASKED TO STAY OFF THE ROAD. IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO WORK, LEAVE AN EXTRA HOUR.
Seans February 11, 2013 at 01:48 PM
Please note, there is a difference between whining and expressing an opinion, learn to tolerate differences.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 02:42 PM
GARY MUST GO? WHY BECAUSE SCHOOL WAS CANCELLED? SCHOOLS ARE CHECKING AND CLEANING THEIR ROOFS AS WELL AS THE FACT DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE NOT THE BEST THAT IS WHY THEY CANCELLED SCHHO ALL OVER CT. WHAT MAKES AVON TO BE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SCHOOLS? STOP WHINING. YOU & YOUR FAMILY SHOULD GO.
Avon Res February 11, 2013 at 03:15 PM
…there is and you guys are whining…and insulting…and accusing. Get a life, PLEASE!
Mitchell Piper February 11, 2013 at 03:30 PM
Canton, Farmington, Simsbury, and West Hartford schools are all closed today. While Avon roads are basically plowed there are many side streets that are one lane. There is also freezing rain this morning. I can't imagine our buses going around town today without an accident. Avon is not exactly a flat town. There are lots of hills that are simply not safe for buses to be driving on. If the Superintendent cancels too early and the weather turns out fine he is criticized. If he cancels too late and a parent feels inconvenienced he is criticized. Having lived in Avon for many years, Gary Mala is the first Superintendent that is acting in a totally transparent manner. He informs parents regarding the budgets, educational standards, security issues, etc.. He is also accessible to parents by phone and email. So pick up the phone and call him. He will certainly listen and try to address your concerns. Our town infrastructure has been suffering for many years due to lack luster budgets. Many roads are in need of repair. Our schools, while excellent, are far behind neighboring communities in course offerings. Rather than complaining on websites why not show up at a BOE, TC, or BOF meeting and express your concerns so that you have a real voice in the decisions of our community. If you don't like those decisions, then get out next November and vote for new leadership on those boards. That's the way the process works.

I agree with Mala on this one. He waited to get the latest weather and road status, without turning this into a Monday morning surprise. With rain and sleet landing on partially-cleared roads, it looks like he got it right. The real issue is not so much bus safety as it is road congestion. The same people who whine about school cancellation would be whining about getting stuck behind a bus that got stuck in the snow. Many of the roads in town are effectively one-way streets. Canceling school on Monday is a no-brainer. The roads are going to be a mess for quite a while, so Tuesday-Friday will be tougher decisions.
Avon Res February 11, 2013 at 04:16 PM
Lt. Vance of the State Police: "It is not safe to travel on Connecticut's roads!" but I guess he doesn't know how to do his job, either ;-)
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 06:12 PM
LET'S PUT IT THIS WAY, THE OPINIONS WERE RUDE (WHY BE NEGATIVE). WORD HAS IT, SCHOOLS MAY NOT OPEN UNTIL WED. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT AVON. IF THAT IS THE CASE, HIRE A NANNY FOR YOUR KIDS. I KNOW OF PEOPLE WHO SEND THEIR PETS TO A DAY CARE AND THEY HAVE NO WORRIES
Jessie Sawyer (Editor) February 11, 2013 at 07:23 PM
It's important to note that Avon typically announces school cancellations early on the morning of the day in question. They instead announced the Friday and Monday cancellations the evening before to give parents more advanced notice. Many other school districts also usually make the call the morning of school too but were announcing early during the blizzard. Jessie Sawyer Editor, Avon Patch

To "Pam," "POODETWA," "Seans," "MB," "Avon Res," "Ali C": Could you all please use your full names when commenting on an article? All of your opinions would gain a lot of credibility if you would please have enough self-respect to identify yourselves, and to stand behind your opinions (and write them with more thoughtfulness and less vitriol). Please go rant somewhere else if you don't have the pride and self-respect to identify yourself. Thanks.
Sarah Calatayud February 11, 2013 at 08:59 PM
Totally agreed, Jessie. People have clearly let the cabin fever go to their heads and they need to think before they type. Silly people!
Sarah Calatayud February 11, 2013 at 09:14 PM
@Pam: "Gary must go."??? Perhaps you should put some more thought and time into that comment and explain exactly how you've arrived at that conclusion, Ms. Exalted One? (Shame on the school district responsible for your insufficient rhetoric skills). And please use your full name if you have something to say. Gary Mala did exactly what we taxpayers pay him to do. He used all the information available to him to make a decision that was in the best interest of our children.
Sarah Calatayud February 11, 2013 at 09:19 PM
@Seans: Would be nice to have a last name, "Seans." I wasn't aware that Gary was responsible for any kind of child care in the event of inclement weather or, in this situation, the worst blizzard CT has seen in over a century? It is my hope that you and "Pam" can wake up tomorrow on the right side of the bed. This has clearly been quite an overwhelming inconvenience for both of you. :)
Sarah Calatayud February 11, 2013 at 09:24 PM
@Pam: ?? So confused. If you're going to write something, why be mysterious? "Actually I could. You deserve everything you accept.".... It's very cryptic. Was that intentional? :) OK, I'm clearly just having fun with you, but still..... you're surprisingly and oddly amusing.
Sarah Calatayud February 11, 2013 at 09:27 PM
@Avon Res: You forgot "befuddling", "amusing", and "mud-slinging." How about "wildly entertaining"? Maybe that one's too strong.
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 10:43 PM
SARAH--- I WAS STICKING UP FOR GARY. I MEANT TO REPLY TO PAM. GARY MADE A GREAT CALL. JUST AN FYI- SIMSBURY CANCELLED AFTER AVON. WHO ARE YOU TO SAY WHAT WHAT NAMES WE COULD USE? WHAT ARE YOU A COP?
POODETWA February 11, 2013 at 10:59 PM
WE MAY GET MEASURABLE SNOW ON WED. MAYBE SCHOOLS WILL HAVE EARLY DISMISSALS AND THEN CANCEL ON THURSDAY! I AM CONFIDENT GARY WILL MAKE AN EXCELLENT DECISION. LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!!!!! I'M THRILLED FOR OUR LOCAL SKI RESORT.
