Schooling You About the Royal Wedding

Five things to know about April 27, 2011.

Hello, Avon! I'm back from my vacation and going through hundreds of e-mails that were sent while I was away. So, I'm here if you need me, and I apologize in advance with any delays in responding.

The Avon Board of Education welcomed me home with a two-and-a-half hour meeting. Superintendent of Schools Gary Mala presented his budget reduction strategy. The board will have $254,497 more than expected due to an unanticipated health insurance, and has accounted for $64,630 in budget adjustments and $95,243 in unanticipated tuition costs, dropping the total reduction from $847,000 to about $752,376. To read more about it, see the full article on Patch.

Ben Bergman, an Avon High School student representative who attends the board meetings, spoke at the meeting about the Sierra Club's third annual Eco-Night, which will be held on Friday April 29, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the high school gallery/lobby and auditorium. The fair "highlights the growing importance of sustainability and eco friendly practices," he wrote in an e-mail to Patch and he said there will be food from local vendors, such as Ben and Jerry's ice cream and The Flatbread Company.  There will also be a movie and other activities. Admission costs $5 and the fair is open to the entire Avon community. I hear even Smokey the Bear will be there!

Speaking of food and major events, the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton is on the same day at Westminster Abbey. I heard about this a lot when I was in Scotland on vacation. For anyone in Scotland or England for vacation, this is a bank holiday. Let me know if there is a slim chance you are attending!
